As one of the UK's leading food and facilities management services providers to the healthcare, education, defence, corporate services and hospitality sectors, Sodexo's consistent approach to integrating what it describes as 'corporate citizenship' initiatives throughout the diverse strands of its business, has seen the company improve its position in the Top 100 every year since it first featured in 2005.
Published as a supplement in The Sunday Times on 25 May, the 'Companies that Count' list presents the organisations which achieved the 100 highest scores in BITC's CR Index, following an assessment of their management practices in BITC's four key areas of corporate responsibility: environment, community, marketplace and workplace.
In a feedback report from BITC, Sodexo performed highly across all four areas to achieve an overall silver rank score of 83.5%; almost a 10% improvement on its 2005 result.
Adopting the term 'corporate citizenship' to describe its approach to corporate responsibility, in the last year Sodexo has established a 'corporate citizenship forum' to provide leadership and direction, an 'environmental forum' to improve communication and develop a robust approach to measuring and managing environmental impacts, a 'diversity and inclusion council' to champion a diverse workforce, and a new role dedicated entirely to sustainable procurement.
Phil Hooper, corporate affairs director, said: “For Sodexo to be ranked in the Top 100 for the third year running is a huge achievement and a testament to our employees' continued commitment to corporate citizenship throughout the business. The result reflects our ambition to play a leading role in setting the industry standard in corporate responsibility best practice; a goal which the publication of this year's Corporate Citizenship Report will take us one step closer towards.”
Thomas Jelley, corporate citizenship manager, said: “We are very excited about the publication of our third Corporate Citizenship Report in mid June. The comprehensive report illustrates committed team work, service spirit and progress, values which have always been part of Sodexo's culture and help us deliver on key corporate responsibility issues such as sustainable procurement, health and well-being, community investment and the environment.”
