As Kalyx's most recent project, HMP Addiewell combined groundbreaking design with innovative operational procedures to produce the most cost-effective solution. Kalyx operates within the same statutory rules as any other prison in Scotland. Male convicted and male untried prisoner admissions (including under-21 year old remands) are accepted at the prison from the North and South Lanarkshire courts.
Increasing the employability of the prisoners is a key priority as this will aid in reducing the likelihood of re-offending. Kalyx has committed to providing 40 hours of purposeful activity, per offender, per week.
HMP Addiewell is designed as a “learning” prison, a place where prisoners can address, not only their offending behaviour and the individual circumstances which lead to their imprisonment, but also where they can be helped to improve their employability prospects, their wellbeing and community support networks, not least those involving their friends and families. The learning infrastructure has been branded Academy @ Addiewell and is an accredited Scottish Qualification Authority centre. The Flexible Learning Centre includes a high quality learning resource centre, a Microsoft Academy, a Learndirect Scotland, core skills classrooms and creative arts studio.
The Skills and Employability unit focuses on learning for employment with classrooms and trades workshops. Prisoners are encouraged to participate in a range of activities with opportunities for personal development. The learning provision forms a major aspect of the integrated regime, acting as a significant element of the sentence or community integration plan of many prisoners. Within the first few months following the opening of the prison, seven prisoners at HMP Addiewell were the first in Scotland to complete a COVAID (Control of Violence for Angry Impulsive Drinkers) cognitive-behavioural programme.
HMP Addiewell has been awarded the 'EatSafe Award' by the environmental health office for excellent standards of cleanliness and good practice within the catering department, recognising that food preparation and cooking is carried out in conditions that are above the current legislation requirements. This is an impressive achievement for a prison that has only been open for six months and is one of only 381 food establishments within Scotland to have the award.
