On a first visit, visitors must bring photographic ID (driver's license or two household bills, statements or official letters) and register on an electronic system which records their photo image and an image of their fingerscan.
Visitors should arrive 20 minutes prior to the visit time, to allow time to register. Once on the system it will speed up future visits. Children will not be expected to register on this system. However, names and dates of birth of all children must be on the booking. All visitors should expect to be searched when entering HMP Addiewell.
All visitors are reminded that if you have not visited the prison for six months, you should bring the appropriate identification to your next visit.
HMP Addiewell is also a part of the email a prisoner scheme. Details can be found at www.emailaprisoner.com
Social visits:
The visit room takes up to 50 visits at any time (with up to three visitors per prisoner) and is bright and comfortable with a children's play area and canteen facility. Within the official visiting times, we are flexible about the actual start times of the visit to fit with the requirements of visitors.
Social visiting times:
Monday-Friday: 1400-1700 & 1900-2045
Saturday-Sunday: 1345-1715
Booking a social visit:
Responsibilities for booking visits lie with prisoners, who receive guidance from wing staff on the process.
Convicted prisoners must book their own social visits using the wing kiosks. Prisoners must complete a Convicted Prisoner Approved List prior to booking visits. They will be required to book the date, time and type of visit, then inform visitors of this information. Convicted prisoner visits must be booked at least 24 hours in advance.
Remand prisoners can book visits using the Remand Visit Booking Order, giving 24 hours notice for a visit. Visitors of remand prisoners can also book a visit by calling 01506 874 500, then selecting option 2, again allowing 24 hours notice. When phoning the visits booking number, please ensure you know the prisoner's name, number, date of birth, the date and time you require the visit and details of who is coming to the visit.
Legal visiting times:
Monday-Friday: 1000-1200 & 1400-1600
Booking a legal visit:
Legal visits are booked by telephone on 01506 874 500, selecting option 2, again giving 24 hours notice. They can also be booked via fax on 01509 874 501 or email at AD.Visits@sodexojusticeservices.com

The prison sits on the eastern boundaries of the village of Addiewell in West Lothian. The village is between the towns of West Calder and Whitburn, with the M8 motorway to the north and the A71 Kilmarnock to Edinburgh road to the south. Livingston is some four miles to the east, while HMP Shotts is eight miles to the west.
By road:
From the M8: Leave the motorway at junction 4 (signposted Bathgate/Whitburn). At the roundabout, take the exit for the road heading to Blackburn/Whitburn. Turn left at the traffic lights and head towards Blackburn. About a mile later and at the next set of traffic lights, turn right on to the B792. The turn off for Addiewell village is two miles up that road. Turn right into Livingstone Street, then left into Station Road. The prison entrance is about 200 yards along that road.
From the A71: In West Calder Main Street, turn left (right when travelling from the Edinburgh direction) down Cleuch Brae into the B792 road for Blackburn. The Livingstone Street turn off for Addiewell Village (as above) is two miles along that road.
By bus: The village is served by a number of bus routes and there is a bus stop within walking distance of the prison. Bus timetables are available at the main visitors' reception area.
By train: Addiewell railway station is a very short walk from the prison, on the same line as Shotts, serviced by the Glasgow Central to Edinburgh trains which run through Cambuslang, Uddingston, Bellshill, Motherwell, Carstairs, Carfin, Cleland, Hartwood, and Shotts in Lanarkshire, before going on through the West Lothian towns of Fauldhouse, West Calder and Livingston on the journey towards the capital.
HMP Addiewell is committed to provide a safe and caring environment for all in our care. If you have any concerns about the safety of a prisoner at HMP Addiewell please phone our switchboard on 01506 874 500. Please ask for our Safer Custody Officer or our Duty Manager. Please inform the switchboard you wish to discuss a safer custody concern that you have about a prisoner. Any information received will be treated with discretion and sensitivity.
