HMP & YOI Bronzefield

HMP & YOI Bronzefield opened in 2004 and is a 527-place female prison run by Sodexo Justice Services. It is the only privately managed purpose-built prison for women in the UK.


Bronzefield is a local prison, taking prisoners directly from the courts. It holds a wide range of female offenders, including remand, sentenced, first stage life sentenced and restricted status women. It also has a 12-bed Mother and Baby Unit, accommodating children up to 18 months old.

Visiting information

Social visits:
A family visits room is available and extended children's visits are held monthly. Monthly family days take place in the gym.
Remand prisoners may have one visit each day for a maximum of one hour each. Convicted prisoners may have four visits per month.

Social visiting times:
Monday-Thursday: 1400-1800 (last booking 1700)
Friday: 1400-1700 (last booking 1600)
Saturday: 0930-1130 and 1400-1700 (last booking 1600)
Sunday: 1400-1700 (last booking 1600)

Booking a social visit:
Prisoners receive visit orders (VO) which they post to a visitor. Visitors may then phone 01784 425 690 and quote a reference number to book a visit.

Legal visiting times:
Monday-Thursday: 0900-1245 and 1400-1800
Friday: 0900-1245 and 1400-1700

Booking a legal visit:
Legal representatives should fax their visit request on company headed paper to 01784 425 691. A confirmation will be faxed back. A company letterhead and one identity document must be brought to the visit.

How to get there:

By road: Leave the M25 at junction 13 taking the A30 (Staines bypass) eastbound. At the first roundabout, Crooked Billet, take the third exit (A308) towards Kingston. At the first roundabout (Fordbridge) take the third exit (B377) towards Laleham and Knowle Green. At the next roundabout take the second exit towards Knowle Green (Kingston Road). Take the first right into Woodthorpe Road. HMP & YOI Bronzefield in on the left after passing under the road bridge. A visitors' car park is available.

By bus: The 117 (Staines - Ashford - Feltham - Hounslow - Isleworth) or the 216 (Kingston - Hampton - Sunbury - Ashford).

By train: Ashford (Middlesex) is the nearest train station. Come out of the station and walk straight ahead to the mini roundabout. Turn right into Woodthorpe Road and continue straight over another mini roundabout. HMP & YOI Bronzefield can be found on your right. It is a 10-minute walk from the station.
