HMP & YOI Peterborough has 1,008 places in total and is the country's only dual purpose-built prison for both men and women. The genders are separated and never mix. The prison also has a 12-place Mother and Baby Unit and holds convicted female young offenders.
The prison accepts adult male prisoners from Cambridgeshire, and females from Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Suffolk, Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Northants and Warwickshire.

Booking a social visit:
All visits must be pre-booked by phoning 01733 217 536.
All domestic visitors must report to the visitors' centre before entering the prison. An unsupervised children's play area is available in both visit rooms. The visitors' centre opens half an hour prior to the start of visits. There is wheelchair access and a no smoking policy is in force. There are no visits on Christmas Day.
Standard regime prisoners can have a one-hour visit per day if unconvicted and a two-hour visit once a week if convicted.
Enhanced regime prisoners can have an additional one-hour visit once a week by application if unconvicted. Enhanced regime prisoners who are convicted can have one three-hour visit per week, with one additional visit per month by application.
The visitors' centre is run by the Friends of Peterborough Prison.

By road: Peterborough prison is situated in the City of Peterborough, approximately half a mile from the city centre. From central Peterborough, take the A15 towards Sleaford, passing Peterborough railway station on the left. At the second roundabout, turn left towards Westwood along Westfield Road. At the first roundabout, turn right along Gresley Way towards Westwood. At the second roundabout, turn right, signposted by a Driving Test Centres and Goods Vehicle Testing Centre. At the T-junction, turn left along Saville Road. Follow signs to HMP & YOI Peterborough on the right. The prison has a car park for visitors' use.
By bus: Buses run every ten minutes, Monday to Saturday, from the city centre bus station (bay Q2). The nearest bus stop to the prison is on Westfield Road, opposite the Shell petrol station. Travel time from the city centre to Westfield Road is approximately ten minutes. It is then an approximate 15-minute walk to the prison entrance. Buses also run on a Sunday from bay Q2 at half-hourly intervals between 10.15am and 5.15pm. Thereafter, buses run every hour at a quarter past the hour. By train: There is a mainline station in Peterborough City Centre. Taxis are available immediately outside the station and the prison is a 10-minute ride away. Alternatively it is possible to walk to the prison along Bourges Boulevard / Mayors Walk, taking around 20 minutes. For detailed train times visit the East Coast website.
