HMP Forest Bank in Salford is one of the largest prisons in the UK with over 1,400 male offenders. The prison demonstrates custodial excellence in many areas with an emphasis on risk assessment. Successful resettlement has been enhanced by engaging with local organisations to offer job opportunities for prisoners on release.
HMP & YOI Bronzefield in Middlesex is the first PFI prison for women in the UK, focusing on needs-based services and programmes aimed at rehabilitating and maintaining the well-being of prisoners. Housing some of the highest risk women prisoners in the country, our security procedures have to be second to none.
HMP & YOI Peterborough is the first purpose-built prison in the UK to house both men and women on the same site. We focus on providing personal development services, such as education, employment, recreation and sports, to help smooth the transition for both men and women when they are released into the community.
HMP Addiewell in West Lothian is a 796-place prison for male offenders in Scotland, which opened in December 2008. We operate the prison under a 25-year contract with the Scottish Prison Service.
Social Impact Bond at HMP & YOI Peterborough
In September 2010, a six-year Social Impact Bond pilot scheme was launched at Sodexo Justice Services' prison HMP & YOI Peterborough, in conjunction with Social Finance and St Giles' Trust.
The scheme uses funds raised from social investors to finance St Giles' Trust and other voluntary sector organisations with a strong track record of reducing reoffending, to work with 3,000 short term offenders at HMP & YOI Peterborough both through the gate and upon their release, to prepare and support them for life on the outside and helping to prevent them returning to a life of crime.
If, and only if, these services are successful and reoffending drops by more than 7.5% within six years, the social investors will receive a return on their investment from the Government, representing a proportion of the saved cost of re-offending. This payment will increase based on the reduction in re-offending, with the total cost of the project capped at £8m.
This Social Impact Bond pilot is the first scheme in the world that is using new funding from social investors outside Government with the aim of reducing reoffending. At a time of tight public finances, payment by results models such as this can tap into new sources of funding to help reduce crime, change lives and provide value for money for the taxpayer. Sodexo Justice Services is proud to be part of this valuable test case.
We are also pleased to be a framework provider for community payback, as well as forming partnerships for the provision of other non-custodial services.
