We are delighted that six Sodexo submissions have made the 2020 IWFM Impact awards shortlist. Our finalist submissions highlight the strength of our business and teams, our innovation, strong client relationships, commitment to social value and investment in our people.

The award winners will be announced on 12 October 2020 at the virtual IWFM Awards.

A summary of our finalist submissions:

Workplace experience: office/ corporate Environment

FINALIST: Edinburgh Park Office, Diageo & Sodexo

Diageo office

Sodexo has worked with Diageo since 2014, in a contract covering all aspects of hard and soft FM. When the lease on Diageo's previous building was ending, they decided to move to a more streamlined 21st-century working environment and relocate their Scottish HQ to a new, bespoke and state-of-the-art Edinburgh address. 

Sodexo supported Diageo with an intensive 16-month project which saw the client move to their new Edinburgh home in November 2019. We produced a detailed 20-page Facilities Manual for the site prior to opening, ensuring staff were aware of the necessary information and protocols for the new office environment. Sodexo also implemented its corporate services Modern Recipe brand and Costa offering on-site and provided external catering from a mobile unit and pre-packed food while the restaurant was being prepared for completion. 

Diageo’s entry to this IWFM Award with Sodexo focused on the involvement of Diageo’s staff group, engaging with change champions to create a fantastic workplace experience in collaboration with those who would directly benefit from it.

Sodexo has also worked with Diageo to help reinforce the client’s commitment to their staff and their health and wellbeing and have made a number of adjustments and preparations for the office to reopen safely in due course.

Social Value

FINALIST: Student Living by Sodexo 

Sodexo pioneered Student Living in 2014. Its aim was to create a meaningful, positive life experience for students throughout their time at university while addressing some of the challenges. Underpinning Sodexo’s portfolio of FM services, its development was based on insight from stakeholders (students, universities, FM communities), examining causal factors, desires, values and anxieties for students living away from home, and in considering their future careers. We translated this into a commitment to sustainable improvement in the overall wellbeing, safety, cohesion, mobility and health of the students we serve. 

The way we design, plan and deliver our services considers the wider environmental and societal benefits by creating ‘social value add’ activities and support for students, not contractually required. We address causal factors, lasting impact and change for our students and tangible social return on investment for the communities where we operate.

As a member of the National Social Value Taskforce and Social Value Portal, Sodexo creates social accounts for our contracts to measure the social impact we deliver while identifying areas for continual improvement. Measurement is not an end in itself, but rather a tool that assists us in designing and prioritising activity for students, responsive to their needs and those of our clients and communities - focusing on what matters most. 


FINALIST: ‘WeCo’ – work together to win together, Johnson & Johnson together with Sodexo

WeCo is a joint virtual organisation created to enable J&J’s engineering and property services team and Sodexo’s facilities team to collaborate effectively. 

Team of the year (private sector)

FINALIST: Student Living by Sodexo Northumbria University team

Student Living by Sodexo provides integrated FM services to our client at Northumbria University across their student accommodation estate. The estate consists of six sites, and the team has worked with the client for four years continuing to provide innovative solutions to enhance the university assets through effective lifecycle planning whilst utilising and embedding our asset management framework. The team's primary goal is to provide an efficient and cost-effective solution to our client, wherever possible using our in-house teams to provide these services. Our team has many years of experience in their relevant fields, this combined with a positive mind set and our corporate values have created and bonded a fantastic dedicated team who all truly care about the customers we serve. At the heart of the team is a wealth of experience and a can-do attitude. Each member has a great deal of knowledge in their individual fields, but they are always willing to learn from each other, and to give each other support and encouragement when required. The team is committed to going that bit further every day and considering our customers in every decision we make.

Covid-19 response award - adapting to new realities 

FINALIST: University of Greenwich IFM Mobilisation, Sodexo, The University of Greenwich and Gardiner & Theobald LLP

In February 2020 the University of Greenwich, supported by consultants Gardiner & Theobald (G&T), awarded an Integrated Facilities Management (IFM) contract to Sodexo. Five weeks into a three-month intensive mobilisation programme, the University went into lockdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic.  

With the new IFM contract due to go-live on 18 May 2020, the team were faced with the challenge of mobilising more than 10 service lines, transferring almost 300 staff and maintaining essential services across three campuses without access to site. Pausing the mobilisation or delaying the contract start was never an option; the University, Sodexo and G&T made a concerted effort to continue despite the challenges and unknowns ahead due to the value this new contract will unlock for staff, students and local communities. The University, Sodexo and G&T worked collaboratively and flexibly using a solution-focused approach to establish new ways of working that facilitated key mobilisation milestones without any template or prototype to rely on. Over 100 staff from the University, Sodexo and G&T led by a core joint mobilisation team made the impossible, possible: the new IFM contract went live on 18 May 2020 with all services and people transferring to Sodexo as planned. The determination, creativity, and unwavering commitment to people and safety shown by the team throughout this journey upholds the spirit of this partnership.
