A team of six Sodexo Defence employees joined in for gardening fun with the Big Dig, the Capital Growth volunteering event that aims to encourage Londoners and local businesses to get their hands dirty within their local community growing space.

The Sodexo Defence team, led by Andy Bailey, contract director, recently spent a day at Sutton Community Farm in Wallington, where they removed weeds, prepared plant beds and planted various vegetable and flower plants.

Contributing to the economic, social and environmental development of the communities, regions and countries in which it operates in is part of Sodexo's mission and is at the core of its Better Tomorrow Plan, its sustainability strategy to 2020.

Andy said: “We are always looking to contribute to the local communities where we operate, whether that's through events like the Big Dig to working with local schools and hospitals. Sutton Community Farm was a great experience, both for the team members with green fingers and some of our beginners! We are already looking at other ways to help many more of the communities in which we work in.”

Seb Mayfield from Capital Growth said: “The first Big Dig proved a great success, thanks partly to a number of employee volunteering teams who provided some valuable practical support. The day acted as a springboard for the community groups who now have an even better chance of growing lots of food in 2012.”
