Packaging and recycling

We’ve introduced innovative packaging and recycling solutions, such as re-useable materials, bioplastics, and organic material, to help eliminate plastic waste from ending up in landfills.

A salad in a recyclable bowlSingle use plastics

In May 2018 Sodexo banned the purchase of all plastic straws and stirrers, and we are committed to phasing out single use plastic bags and polystyrene foam items such as cups, lids and food containers by 2020.

In 2017, Sodexo became a supply chain member of the Simply Cups scheme, the UK’s only collection and recycling service dedicated to turning paper and plastic cups into second-life material.

Sodexo’s customers can buy the innovative rCup, a reusable cup made from used disposal cups treated by Simply Cups. Together Sodexo and Simply Cups are increasing the number of cups and lids that can have a second life.

Since March 2018 all Sodexo outlets have been able to accept any brand of reusable coffee cup and in some contracts already offer price reductions and levies to encourage a behavioural change from using disposable to reusable cups.

The cup conundrum

Sadly, our planet is under threat. Our climate is changing, our natural resources are running out and pollution is ruining our health, our landscape and our oceans. At Sodexo, we care deeply about this and we want to do our bit to help protect our precious environment.

That’s why we’ve made it our mission to ensure that, by 2020, 70% of all waste on our sites will be recycled or reused, rising to 90% by 2025. And because great distances are covered with many small steps, we’re starting with cups.
