Alice's Electrifying Career Change at Sodexo
For 20 years, Alice Sims thrived in the hospitality sector, running nightclubs and restaurants. But as her 40th birthday approached, she felt a pull towards a new challenge, a career that would offer long-term satisfaction. That's when she joined Sodexo as an administrator at Leonardo in Yeovil, a move that unknowingly set the stage for an incredible transformation.
Just six months into her new role, Alice's career took an unexpected, electrifying turn. During a meeting discussing upcoming apprenticeship opportunities, a spark ignited. Alice had always harboured a secret desire to train as an electrician, a dream put on hold years ago. Seeing this as her chance, she bravely asked if she could apply.

"It was a bit of a lightbulb moment," Alice recalls. "I'd mentioned it years ago, but it just sort of re-triggered an interest." Her enthusiasm was met with immediate support. Kevin Davies, who first mentioned the apprenticeships, became a champion for her application, setting the wheels in motion. Ash Hawkins, the electrical supervisor, also jumped on board, providing invaluable support with paperwork, equipment and guidance.
The four-year apprenticeship programme combines classroom learning with hands-on experience. Alice spends two days every other week at college, and the rest of her time working alongside the electrical team at Leonardo in Yeovil. This practical experience has been invaluable.
"When I started, I'd barely held a screwdriver. Now, just three months in, I've done everything from angle grinding and SDS drilling to installing cable trays and replacing light fittings. I've even got my MEWP (Mobile Elevated Work Platform) course next week!"
Alice is now fully immersed in her apprenticeship, having swapped her admin role for a full-time position in power services. Her typical week involves working with the team on testing electrical systems, from the power source to the wall sockets. "Every day is different," she explains. "Every day is a challenge, and every day is a learning day."
The apprenticeship will equip Alice with several qualifications, including the IPATH, AM1, ECS (Electrical Contracting Scheme) card, and finally, the AM2, which will qualify her as an electrician. Her ambitions don't stop there. She plans to become an approved electrician and then specialise in inspection and testing.

Alice is effusive in her praise for Sodexo's support. "They've not questioned it," she says. "They've provided everything I've needed. They've backed me up 100%." She particularly mentions Kevin Davies and Ash Hawkins for their instrumental roles in making her career change a reality.
"Kev set the wheels in motion, and Ash made sure all the paperwork was filled in and that I had the equipment and tools I needed."
When asked if she would recommend the Sodexo apprenticeship programme, Alice's answer is a resounding "Yes!"
She encourages anyone considering a career change to "definitely go for it," especially with the support of managers and supervisors.
As Alice looks to the future, she's excited about the possibilities that lie ahead. "Sodexo offers a lot of opportunities to progress," she says. "I just want to keep striving forward."
