How JailBirds’ Christmas creations are changing lives
JailBirds is an ongoing programme at HMP Peterborough and HMP/YOI Bronzefield for female prisoners. It provides them with the opportunity to get creative and learn practical skills, producing everything from cards and coasters to handmade Christmas decorations. All proceeds from JailBirds are reinvested into the programme or donated to the Sodexo Stop Hunger Foundation.
Art can be a powerful tool which encourages self-expression, healing, and transformation. It plays a crucial role across the six UK prisons managed by Sodexo’s Government business, helping prisoners process life’s challenges, express emotions, and embark on rehabilitative journeys.
From managing mental health to reducing the risk of reoffending, Sodexo’s art programmes – including Jailbirds – inspire positive change and offer a brighter path forward.
The JailBirds programme is about more than just crafting—it’s about empowering women, building confidence, and creating a meaningful impact in the community.
How JailBirds began
The programme has its roots in craft workshops at HMP/YOI Bronzefield, where products were originally made to support Barnardo’s charity. Over time, this initiative evolved into a fully-fledged social enterprise.
Ten years ago, the JailBirds brand was introduced to align creativity with purpose, offering women in prison a chance to develop new skills while giving back to society.
Today, JailBirds is a vibrant, multidisciplinary workshop. It combines textile production, fine art, crochet, and jewellery-making to produce high-quality, handmade products.
Festive creations with a personal touch
Christmas is always a busy and creative time for JailBirds and this Christmas the prisoners have been busy crafting a delightful range of holiday items, including:
- Crochet and felt decorations: Featuring charming amigurumi designs—small, crocheted characters inspired by Japanese artistry—these decorations are a unique blend of traditional craft and modern design.
- Christmas cards: Customers love the variety, from intricate die-cut cards to hand-drawn designs that add a personal touch.
- Decorative gifts: Items like placemats, Christmas stockings, and Christmas spice-scented bags bring holiday cheer to any space.
Production for all these items is well under way and so far this season the prisoners have created:
- 60 placemats
- 23 crochet and felt decorations
- 50 multipacks of cards
- 20 individual beaded cards
- 15 Christmas stockings
- 15 Christmas spice-scented bags.
Crafting confidence and community
JailBirds is more than just a workshop; it’s a space for growth and transformation. Women participating in the programme gain hands-on experience in techniques such as quilting, patchwork, and product design. A standout skill taught is the “crazy patch” quilting method, which repurposes fabric scraps to create stunning designs.
Beyond technical skills, JailBirds emphasises teamwork, communication, and resilience. Women share their knowledge, critique each other’s work, and engage in activities that enhance their employability.
From budgeting to problem-solving, these lessons not only boost self-esteem but also prepare participants for life beyond prison.
Driving social impact
This year, as well as proceeds being donated to the Sodexo Stop Hunger Foundation – funds were used to purchase an overlocker sewing machine, giving participants the chance to learn advanced textile skills in a professional setting.
Generous support from the local community has been instrumental to the programme’s success. Donations of fabrics, materials and time – such as volunteers teaching jewellery-making – further enhance the learning experience for participants.
Where to find JailBirds products JailBirds products are sold in several ways:
- Community café: A permanent collection is available at the café outside HMP Bronzefield.
- Local events: Products are showcased at community events like Staines-upon-Thames Day and social group talks, such as the recent Egham Gardening Club event where over £80 worth of items were sold.
- Collaborations: JailBirds partners with local florists and Sodexo’s head office in London to sell their creations.
Plans to launch an online store are underway, making these handcrafted items accessible to a wider audience soon.
The joy of giving back
Customers consistently praise the quality and creativity of JailBirds products. Beyond the festive season, JailBirds also produces goods for occasions like Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, and Remembrance Day. For instance, crocheted poppies created this year raised £87.50 for the Royal British Legion.
At its heart, JailBirds is about second chances, creativity, and community. The programme empowers women to rediscover their potential, build confidence, and make meaningful contributions to society. By purchasing Jailbirds’ handmade creations, people are not only adding something special to their Christmas celebrations but also supporting a programme that transforms lives.
