Food Waste Meets Nutrition
Every year, we throw away over a third of all food produced worldwide, while millions go hungry. It's a shocking disconnect—perfectly good fruits, vegetables, dairy products, and proteins end up in the trash just because they look a bit odd, weren't stored properly, or have confusing labels.
In the UK and Ireland alone, homes and supermarkets dump millions of tonnes of food annually. This isn't just bad for the environment and our wallets—it's robbing people of vital nutrients. When we waste food, we're essentially throwing away the vitamins, minerals, and proteins our bodies need to thrive.

We can tackle this problem in simple ways: being smarter shoppers, improving how food moves from farm to table, and pushing for better policies. Some promising solutions are already working—like creating new products from food that would otherwise be wasted, making food labels easier to understand, and embracing root-to-stem cooking, where we use the entire vegetable or fruit instead of discarding nutritious parts like stems, leaves, and peels.
Small, sustainable changes in how we think about food can make a huge difference.
