Jonathan Wild - Apprenticeship: Team leader/ supervisor Level 3
In 2015, Jonathon embarked on a phase of considerable growth, both professionally and personally. Motivated by a clearer sense of purpose and a willingness to push his boundaries, he seized a variety of opportunities that enabled him to build a solid operational foundation, deepen his understanding of people and leadership, and human behaviour, and steadily take on more responsibility. His journey since has been shaped by learning, ongoing self-development, and a strong focus on supporting prisoner rehabilitation.
My Journey So Far
After returning to a role in a Sodexo prison in 2015, I had a clear (ish!) idea of what I wanted to do and hoped to achieve. I spent my first year working in residence which provided a strong foundation and understanding of day-to-day prison life.
After 18 months , I applied for a role within the programmes team, where I was responsible for delivering a range of offender treatment programmes. This opportunity provided me with a much deeper understanding of other people and their behaviours, while also encouraging greater self-awareness and personal growth.
Building on my knowledge, I applied for a first line manager role and became involved in the implementation of Key Work at the prison. My management experience saw me promoted to SPCO (Senior Prison Custody Officer), returning briefly to a residential unit before progressing into the industries department.
I have also recently been involved in the mobilisation of two Sodexo prison contracts (HMP Altcourse and HMP Forest Bank), contributing to the transition and establishment of new operational processes. Working closely with a wide range of stakeholders I have gained first-hand experience of the challenges and complexities involved in bringing a new contract into operation.
Why I Chose an Apprenticeship
I had never really considered an apprenticeship until I noticed the opportunities available on the Sodexo intranet. At the time, my son was completing his own apprenticeship and it felt like the ideal opportunity to develop my own skills as a manager.
From a personal point of view, I felt that achieving something new would also give my wellbeing a real boost - it certainly did.
Learning and Support
A requirement of the apprenticeship meant I needed to complete Level 2 Maths and English - something I wasn’t particularly looking forward to. However, the support I received from my manager, the teaching staff in the education department and the online masterclasses all played a key role in helping me through. I successfully complete my course in July 2025 and my certificate hangs proudly in my office.
Where I’m Heading
I genuinely love the work I do within the prison, particularly in supporting rehabilitation and I’m motivated to further develop in this field while also gaining experience outside of the prison environment
Sometimes we stay where we feel most comfortable and that can limit progress, so I’m keen to keep pushing myself while exploring new opportunities.
My Message to Others
Have a look at what’s out there and give it a go. If it’s not for you, that’s fine, but opportunities are there if you want them. All you need is motivation and sometimes a small (or big!) push in a direction that right for you.
“Push yourself, be open and vulnerable, learn from those around you and welcome a little nudge when you need it.”
