Creating a workplace where people can thrive

Employer of the Year isn't something you become. It's something you build.

Bill Buchan, HR Director Sodexo UK & Ireland

When we were named Employer of the Year at this year's British Business Awards, I felt an enormous sense of pride. Not because we'd won a trophy, but because of what it represents.

Awards are decided on one evening.

Becoming an Employer of the Year takes years. It takes thousands of people, countless conversations, a willingness to listen, the courage to challenge ourselves, and a commitment to keep improving every single day.

Most importantly, it takes colleagues who care. That is what this award recognises. As HR Director, I'm often asked what makes a great employer. My answer is always the same: it's not one initiative or one policy. It's the choices you make every day that shape how people experience work.

  • Do people feel welcome?
  • Do they feel they belong?
  • Can they see opportunities to learn, develop and progress?
  • Are they supported when they need it?
  • Can they be themselves?
  • And do they feel that what they do makes a difference?

Those are the questions that matter.

I'm proud that the judges recognised not just the scale of our business, but how we've embedded opportunity, inclusion and social mobility into the way we operate. They highlighted everything from learning and mentoring to campaigns such as Starting Fresh, recognising that creating opportunity isn't an add-on, it's fundamental to who we are.

That opportunity looks different for different people. For one colleague, it might be starting an apprenticeship. For another, it could be taking the next step into leadership.

For someone rebuilding their life after prison, it might simply be someone believing in their potential and opening a door that had previously been closed.

For thousands of colleagues, it's knowing they're part of a workplace where they are respected, supported and encouraged to succeed.

When we talk about creating a better everyday, this is what we mean.

None of this happens because of HR alone.

Culture is created by managers who coach rather than direct. Teams who support one another. Leaders who listen. Colleagues who make new starters feel welcome. Clients who share our values. Employee networks that help people feel they belong.

Every one of those interactions helps shape the experience of working at Sodexo.

The award belongs to all of them.

Over the coming week, we're going to take you behind the scenes of what it really means to be Employer of the Year.

We'll share stories from colleagues across our business. You'll hear about careers that have grown over decades, people who have overcome barriers to employment, leaders who are developing future talent, and the everyday moments that make Sodexo such a special place to work.

Because while we're incredibly proud of this recognition, we know that being an Employer of the Year isn't a destination.

It's a responsibility.

One we'll continue working hard to earn every single day.
