Security Officers Day - Conor Murphy

Conor Murphy is a de-escalation guard at Redfern – which is in Manchester city centre and is one of the busiest probation offices in the country.

He's worked for Sodexo for four years and this Security Officers' Day, he shares his story.

How did you become a security officer?

I became a security officer after a period of unemployment. Whilst I was out of work, I was offered the opportunity to take an SIA (Security Industry Authority) training course. I saw it as a chance to gain new skills and improve my employment prospects. After successfully completing the course and obtaining my SIA licence, I was able to apply for security roles. I quickly found that I enjoyed the responsibility, professionalism, and variety that comes with working in the security industry. Since then, I have continued to develop my experience and confidence as a security officer.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

The most rewarding part of my job is being able to make a positive difference in the lives of vulnerable people. Supporting individuals who may be facing difficult circumstances and helping them feel safe, respected, and valued gives me a great sense of purpose. Knowing that my actions can contribute to someone's wellbeing and confidence is extremely fulfilling.

I also enjoy working closely with my teammates. A strong team environment allows us to share knowledge, support one another, and work together to achieve the best outcomes.

Another important aspect of my job is ensuring that clients, visitors, and people on probation are kept safe at all times. Maintaining a secure and welcoming environment is a responsibility I take seriously. It is rewarding to know that my work helps create a place where people feel protected and supported.

How is technology changing the way you work?

Technology has had a limited impact on the way I work. Most of our daily tasks are still carried out using traditional methods rather than advanced digital systems. The main technology we use includes a basic access control system, two-way radios for communication, and body-worn cameras to support safety and accountability. While these tools help improve communication, security, and record-keeping, we currently make very little use of more advanced technologies or automated systems in our roles.

Why are security officers vital to the way Sodexo works?

Security officers are essential to Sodexo because they help create safe, secure, and welcoming environments for employees, clients, customers, and visitors. We protect people by preventing incidents, responding to emergencies, and providing a reassuring presence. We also safeguard property and assets by deterring theft, vandalism, and unauthorised access.

In emergencies such as fire alarms, medical incidents, or security breaches, we are often the first to respond and coordinate with emergency services.

Any memorable experiences you can tell us about helping others as a security officer?

One of the most memorable experiences I have had as a security officer involved helping a person on probation who suddenly collapsed and stopped breathing. I was first on the scene. Drawing on my first aid training, I began CPR while emergency services were contacted and colleagues assisted with crowd control and access for paramedics.

Those moments felt intense and focused. My attention was entirely on giving the individual the best possible chance of survival. I continued providing CPR until the ambulance crew arrived and took over. Later, I learned that my actions had played an important role in helping to save the person's life. Knowing that I was able to make a difference in such a critical situation is something I will never forget.

As a result of the incident, I was awarded Star of the Month and nominated for the Pacesetters Officer of Distinction Award. While receiving the recognition was a great honour, the award itself was not the most important part for me. The real reward was knowing that my training, quick response and commitment to helping others had contributed to a positive outcome for someone in need.

I felt an enormous sense of pride at being involved in saving a life. That experience reinforced why I value working in security and reminded me how important it is to stay prepared.
