Security Officers Day - Conor Murphy

Name: Kyle Karim
Role: Senior Controller at the Sodexo Security Control Centre
Fact: 2026 ACS Pacesetters Officer of Distinction awards

I became a security officer because I wanted a role where every day is different and where I could genuinely make a difference to people. I've always enjoyed helping others, and security gives me the opportunity to do that while working in a fast-paced environment. Over the years, it's become much more than just a job—it's a career I'm proud of, and one that has allowed me to grow both personally and professionally. Being recognised as an ACS Pacesetters Finalist has been a real highlight and a reminder that the commitment and passion I bring to my role are making a positive impact.
For me, the most rewarding part is knowing that people feel safe because I'm there. Sometimes it's dealing with an incident, but often it's the smaller moments—helping someone who's lost, supporting a colleague, or simply being a friendly face at the start of someone's day. It's those everyday interactions that make the role so worthwhile. Recognition like becoming an ACS Pacesetters Finalist is incredibly rewarding, but the greatest achievement is knowing I've helped someone or made their day a little easier.
Technology has made a real difference to the way we work. It allows us to respond more quickly, communicate more effectively, and manage incidents more efficiently. From digital reporting to advanced CCTV and access control systems, it helps us focus more on supporting people and less on administration. While technology is a fantastic tool, I still believe the human side of security—building trust, staying calm under pressure, and using good judgement—is what really makes the difference.
Security officers are much more than just a visible presence. We're often the first people that visitors, clients, and colleagues meet, so we help shape their first impression of Sodexo. Our role is about keeping people safe, responding when things don't go to plan, and providing reassurance every day. We work closely with other teams to create an environment where everyone feels secure, welcomed, and able to focus on what they do best. I'm proud to be part of a team that quietly makes such a big difference behind the scenes.
One of the things I enjoy most about this role is that no two days are the same. Some of the moments that stay with me aren't necessarily the biggest incidents, but the times when I've been able to help someone who was having a difficult day or needed support. Whether it's assisting during a medical emergency, de-escalating a challenging situation, or simply taking the time to listen and reassure someone, those moments are what the role is all about. Seeing the difference a calm approach and a few kind words can make is incredibly rewarding, and it's one of the reasons I love what I do.
