How did you become a security officer?

I began my career in Security following formal training and licensing about 16 years ago, following a full trade completion. This industry aligned with my interest in public safety and helping and assisting others in multiple fields as a static officer.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

What is rewarding to me is helping people in need or in stressful situations, where I can use experience along with accredited courses to lend assistance—whether it may be physical intervention, first aid assistance, or just calming or de-escalating a situation. There are always new events or experiences daily which can be satisfying to be a part of. I've also been able to lead a team and maintain standards across audit compliance and the standards set out by the PSA.

How is technology changing the way you work?

As technology is always evolving, I see changes for the better lately in the patrol management systems in place, like E-cat or E360—these tools make reporting incidents or flagging issues more streamlined. There's also been the recent introduction of the Oysta smart monitoring lone worker device, a monitored piece of kit used by Security on a daily basis to fulfil the requirement for lone working welfare check calls. While this device is connected to a monitoring station in real time, it also offers extra technological protection with non-movement and fall detection technology built in.

Why are security officers vital to the way Sodexo works?

Security officers are vital because they protect people, property, and assets while maintaining a positive and polite attitude. Any memorable experiences you can tell us about helping others as a security officer?

Many events have taken place over my years as a store detective, retail security officer, and static security officer, with a lot in my memory and some forgotten. But one incident stands out as a good example of how remaining calm and collected under pressure can yield positive results. During exam time, while on duty on the Grangegorman campus, Sodexo Security received a call from a lecturer stating a student was in difficulty. Upon attendance, it was deemed the individual was having a seizure/epileptic fit.

Myself and trained first aiders were able to clear the area and follow procedures during such an event until the emergency services arrived. The student involved was treated successfully without any injury to herself or others. This was a positive result and was good for Security response and team building.
