Security Officers Day - Jillian Mackinnon 

I've always been interested in helping people and creating safe environments. I started my career in customer service, where I developed strong communication and problem-solving skills. I also gained valuable experience in event stewarding, working at busy events and helping to ensure the safety and wellbeing of attendees. That role taught me how to stay calm under pressure, manage large crowds, and respond quickly to unexpected situations. 

Through these experiences, I realised I enjoyed working in roles that required responsibility, quick thinking, and a focus on people. I decided to move into security, gained the necessary qualifications, and haven't looked back. What attracted me most was the opportunity to make a tangible difference to people's safety and wellbeing every day, while continuing to develop my skills in a rewarding and challenging industry.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

The most rewarding part of my job is knowing that I help people feel safe and supported. Whether it's assisting a visitor who needs help, responding to an incident, or simply being a reassuring presence on site, every day presents an opportunity to make a positive impact. It's incredibly satisfying to know that my work contributes to a safe environment for colleagues, clients, and customers.

I'm also fortunate to have a line manager who genuinely supports both my professional development and day-to-day success. Their guidance, encouragement, and trust have helped me grow in confidence and take on new challenges within my role. Working in an environment where you're supported and your contributions are recognised makes a huge difference, and it's something I really value. Knowing that I have that backing enables me to perform at my best and continue developing my career within the security industry. 

How is technology changing the way you work? 

Technology has transformed the security industry in many positive ways. We now have access to advanced CCTV systems, digital reporting tools, access control systems, and real-time monitoring platforms that help us work more efficiently and respond more quickly to incidents. These tools allow us to spend less time on paperwork and more time focusing on proactive security measures and supporting people on site.

Why are security officers vital to the way Sodexo works? 

Security officers play a critical role in supporting Sodexo's commitment to creating safe, productive, and welcoming environments. We're often the first point of contact for visitors, contractors, and colleagues, so we're not only protecting people and assets but also representing Sodexo's values every day. 

For sites such as Diageo, security officers also play an important role in upholding Diageo's values and standards. Whether that's acting with integrity, taking pride in what we do, collaborating with others, or ensuring everyone goes home safely at the end of the day, security teams help bring those values to life through our daily interactions and actions. 

By maintaining a secure environment, supporting operational teams, and delivering excellent customer service, we help ensure that business operations can run smoothly and that employees, visitors, and contractors can focus on their work with confidence. Security is about far more than preventing incidents—it's about building trust, supporting people, and contributing to a positive workplace culture. 

Any memorable experiences you can tell us about helping others as a security officer? 

One experience that has stayed with me throughout my career happened while I was working as an event security steward during Winter Fest in Glasgow city centre. I noticed a vulnerable young woman who was heavily intoxicated and appeared to be at risk from the behaviour of two men who were attempting to lead her away from the event area. Trusting my instincts and following the safeguarding procedures in place, I intervened, ensured the woman was moved to a place of safety, and worked with colleagues to provide support and arrange appropriate assistance. 

The incident was a powerful reminder that security is about much more than protecting property or enforcing rules—it's about protecting people, particularly those who may be vulnerable and unable to protect themselves. Knowing that my actions may have prevented a very serious situation from occurring reinforced the importance of being vigilant, proactive, and compassionate in this profession.

Experiences like that make me proud to work in security. They demonstrate how security professionals can make a real difference to someone's life, often in ways that are never seen by others, and they remind me why I chose this career in the first place.
