Life at Sodexo
Leading from the frontline: 28 years of Paula Campbell at Sodexo

It was undeniably the most rewarding experience of my career.
This impactful statement from Graeme Cromwell, Head of Quality and Compliance at Sodexo Health & Care, perfectly captures the potential that arises from taking on unexpected challenges. Graeme's career, far from following a predictable course, is defined by adaptability, resilience, and a knack for seizing opportunities.
Graeme's career began in the hospitality industry, after he completed his studies at Oxford Brookes University. He honed his expertise at renowned institutions like Tate Modern, where he managed events for over a decade. "My early career was largely focused on managing events in art galleries and museums," he shares, highlighting his experience at the Royal Academy.
It was during his time at the Royal Academy, specifically with Peyton Events, that his path unexpectedly merged with Sodexo. "Sodexo acquired the company (Peyton Events), and the Sodexo team arrived one day announcing the acquisition," Graeme recalls, describing the 2016 event that marked the start of his Sodexo career. This set the stage for a series of transformations that would redefine his career path.
Initially, the transition was subtle. "We didn't feel like Sodexo at all," Graeme admits, describing the period following the acquisition. However, as the company integrated its new acquisition, Graeme found himself navigating new systems and processes. Little did he know that a far greater challenge, and a significant opportunity, lay just around the corner.
As with many industries, the events sector was dramatically impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. "In March 2020, the pandemic caused the cancellation of all our events," Graeme recounts. This unprecedented situation led to an unexpected phone call and a pivotal moment in his career. "I received a call from my manager and was asked to go to Wembley, to the IKEA car park," he says, describing the initial steps towards establishing COVID-19 testing centres.
This was a significant departure from the world of art galleries and exclusive events, but Graeme embraced the challenge. "It was just a car park; I met with representatives from Deloitte, the government and a construction team," he explains, painting a picture of the initial uncertainty and the need for rapid solutions. Despite the unfamiliarity of the situation, Graeme found himself at the forefront of a critical operation. "We collaborated to establish and operationalise a testing centre," he says, highlighting his ability to act decisively and adapt to unfamiliar territory.
The experience sparked a desire for a more permanent shift in his career trajectory. "I recognised the potential for growth and the opportunity to redefine my career path," Graeme explains. He saw a chance to contribute to a sector that aligned with his values and offered new avenues for growth. "As someone mentioned recently, there's a sense of fulfilment in contributing to something meaningful," he shares, capturing the sense of purpose he found in Health & Care.
Today, as Head of Quality and Compliance, Graeme leverages his operational experience to ensure high standards and support his team. "My operational background allows me to understand the challenges faced by frontline staff," he notes, emphasising his understanding of the practical realities. "We approach our work from an operator's perspective."
Graeme has embraced opportunities to expand his skillset though ongoing training and development at Sodexo. "There are ample opportunities for development within this segment, and the company actively encourages professional growth," he says, emphasising the support he has received. This support has enabled him to thrive in his new role, contributing to the ongoing success of the Health & Care segment
I feel valued and recognise a clear career path," he says, highlighting the supportive environment. The company culture is centred on developing and promoting its people.
