Continually reviewing and improving our approach to energy management

As part of our Better Tomorrow roadmap, we have made the commitment to reduce all carbon emissions by 34% within the UK and Ireland by 2025. This target has been approved by the Science Based Target Initiative, and puts us on track to achieve the target set by the UK government to reach net zero carbon by 2050.

We will do this by continually reviewing and improving our approach to energy management and using resources responsibly. We are pleased to confirm that the electricity for our UK estate is now wholly supplied from renewable sources, which will reduce our carbon footprint by over 6,000 tCO2 every year.

We are also increasing our use of fuel efficient vehicles, and are confident that advances in technology and our close relationships with vehicle manufacturers will see the number of electric vehicles we use significantly increase by 2025, which will help reduce the impact of our operations on the environment.

Delivering savings through LED lighting

Lighting represents around 20% of a building's electricity consumption, so more efficient lighting is a simple and effective way to reduce energy use. LED lighting can deliver electricity savings of up to 80% against other less efficient lighting, while also having a longer lifecycle. We identified an effective LED lighting replacement programme at Tillery Valley Foods' large food production site in Wales, which delivered:

- Electricity savings in year one alone of over £71k

- Electrcity savings over five years of around £356k

- Payback period of 1.1 years - the investment made will be paid for in savings in just over a year

- A reduction of Sodexo's carbon footprint by over 294 tonnes
