Sodexo has launched a technical apprenticeship programme to attract new engineering talent and develop a pool of skilled engineers and future managers.

The first intake of programme recruits will be enrolled onto a formal three-year maintenance and operations engineering technician apprenticeship while also working at one of Sodexo’s client sites.

A crucial part of the programme is providing apprentices with the opportunity to work in different areas of Sodexo’s business, providing them with a valuable experience in various market sectors as well as an understanding of the breadth of Sodexo's operations.

The apprentices will also take part in Sodexo-run enrichment days which will provide them with a better understanding of the FM industry and the range of services offered in FM.

The enrichment days will also cover topics such as effective communication and management skills to help recruits gain skills that can be applied throughout their career.

Sue Davison, head of apprenticeships at Sodexo UK & Ireland, said:

"The technical apprenticeship programme has been established in recognition of the challenges across the FM industry in attracting, retaining and developing engineers.

"Like many in our industry, we recognise that, if we don’t act now, we could face a shortage of competent, skilled engineers in the future, with many of our existing engineering workforce approaching retirement in the next ten years.

We have launched the programme as a way of attracting new talent to Sodexo and the wider industry – we hope this will open the door to a new and exciting career for many people who may not previously have considered engineering as a job, or weren’t aware of the breadth of roles available with the FM industry.

“Alongside our commitment to supporting these recruits through their formal apprenticeship, we will be equipping them with the management skills that will enable them to further progress their careers."

Recruitment for the new programme is underway with the first apprentices due to start in January 2021.
